Stationary Bikes

Stationary Bikes

Terry Wulf and Emma Trofholz, Health and Fitness Teachers, 2023-2024 School Year

Description & Need:
We are looking to expand our Health/Fitness program by implementing stationary bikes. With our growing enrollment numbers our Health/Fitness program needs another way to increase cardiovascular fitness. The Fitness Room is long and narrow and it is unsafe for running. It would be very beneficial to have stationary bikes as another way to exercise safely in that classroom.

How project meets Instruction Goals and Mission Statement:
One of the 3 learning goals in Fitness is, "students will learn to improve aerobic capacity". Having students exercise on stationary bikes would greatly improve their opportunity to meet that goal. Stationary bikes would also help students who are dealing with injuries or who are going through physical therapy. Currently, our injured students/athletes do not have an effective way to recover from injury. With the implementation of stationary bikes, all learners would have the opportunity to achieve success.

Major Objectives:
While students use the Stationary Bikes, they would be able to exercise in their target heart rate zone with the use of oxy/pulse meters to measure their heart rate. This would give students instant feedback to show if they are working at their correct level.

Teaching Methods:
The teaching methods used for this project would be that around 1/2 of the fitness class would use stationary bikes for cardiovascular endurance and the other half would strength train. Another method would be that the stationary bikes would be part of a circuit-style workout. We would also offer stationary bikes to the students of the Life Skills Program and the CMS staff when the Fitness room is available.

Grade Level Impacted:
This project will affect nearly every CMS student from grades 5-8.

Additional Materials:
The only other material from the District would be more funding. We would need at least 15 stationary bikes. This grant would graciously donate $1,000. Our other means of raising money would be to run concession stands for CPS events. The Health and Fitness teachers along with CMS students would volunteer to organize concessions to raise money for this project. If for some reason we do not raise enough money, we would only purchase the number of stationary bikes that we have the money for.

Project Evaluation:
By having students exercise on stationary bikes, it will be easy to see whether or not the students are exercising in their target heart rate zone with the use of oxy/pulse meters (our department currently has oxy/pulse meters).
