Discoverers of Distinction Induction Ceremony to Honor Four Distinguished Individuals

Columbus, NE – February 17, 2025 – Four distinguished individuals will be honored at the 2025 Discoverers of Distinction induction ceremony, recognizing their remarkable achievements across various fields. The event will take place on April 10th, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Columbus American Legion. Tickets for the banquet are available for purchase online at CPS Anchor Website.

The annual Discoverers of Distinction ceremony celebrates the extraordinary accomplishments of Columbus Public Schools alumni, as well as honorary individuals who have made lasting impacts on the community. This year's honorees include:

Legacy Inductees:

  • Michael Floyd (Class of 1968): A New York Times Best-Selling Co-Author and Commissioned Officer in the United States Army Military Police. Floyd’s career as a writer and his service to the country exemplify leadership and dedication. His literary accomplishments and military service have garnered him recognition on a national scale.

  • Karen Blessen (Class of 1969): A Pulitzer Prize-Winning Artist. Blessen’s work as a visual artist has earned her some of the highest honors in the industry, including the prestigious Pulitzer Prize. Her artistic achievements and contributions to the field have left a lasting legacy on the national arts scene.

  • Jill Hoops Seidel (Class of 2003): A decorated UH-60 Blackhawk Helicopter Pilot, Seidel has achieved remarkable success in her military career, including pilot in command certification and the award of both the Meritorious Service Medal and the Bronze Star. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Seidel’s accomplishments represent the highest level of excellence and leadership.

Honorary Inductee:

  • Dr. Fred Bellum: The long-serving Superintendent of Columbus Public Schools, Dr. Bellum has played a key role in shaping the educational landscape of Columbus. His commitment to student success, academic innovation, and community collaboration has made him a beloved figure in the local school system.

The Discoverers of Distinction induction ceremony offers the Columbus community a chance to celebrate the outstanding contributions of these exceptional individuals. Their achievements reflect the values of hard work, integrity, and service, qualities that are deeply embedded in the spirit of Columbus Public Schools.
